25/10/06 | South Lanarkshire Council Launch Lanlinks Life Skills!

Yesterday saw the launch of Lanlinks Life Skills by UCIT at South Lanarkshire Council Headquarters in Hamilton. The event was well attended, with representation from all the Youth Groups across Lanarkshire.

Proceedings were kicked off by ICT Evangelist Russell Prue.  Russell demonstrated the online learning materials: Lanlinks Life Skills, developed by MDC Learning Systems. A demonstration was then given of how ICT can effectively be used to enhance learning. Russell has been inspiring and motivating corporate audiences for over 21 years.  He is a well known Educational IT presenter.  Russell has pioneered the use of technology in presentations and regularly introduces his audiences to dynamic content and engaging methods of delivery.

A presentation was then made local councillor Jackie Burns.

The online learning materials have been developed over a 12 month period in close consultation with the young people of Lanarkshire. Extensive consultations were carried out with young people to identify subject key areas to be developed into online learning (First Aid, Stress Management and Health all came out high). Young people were consulted throughout the project lifecycle in order to develop something motivating and relevant.

A scenario and character based approach was taken for the learning materials. Virtual guides were used to ensure a friendly and non threatening learning experience while making the experience less traditional to veer away from any negative learning experiences the learners may have had in the past. Choice of a linear or more immersive learning experience was given.

The project also involved working with a group of young people who came to MDC every fortnight for a development session where they got to learn how to create e-Learning! The group were able to ‘track’ the development process in terms of skills development including sessions on Dreamweaver, Flash, learning styles, writing for the web, storyboarding etc.
